Orbitz appoints new big-time CMO

This is related to yesterday's post, so I found it relevant to comment on.

Orbitz, online travel site, has appointed Chris Orton from online giant eBay as CMO. Orton left eBay as Senior Director of Internet Marketing.

The key here is what Orton is going to do with Orbitz. They compete with Priceline and Expedia and other travel sites that are offering basically all the same things. According to the article, Orton's ability to take massive sets of data and combine and convert these to marketing opportunities will be vital for Orbitz. I think this is a great idea. This is similar to what Google is doing in the UK as per the last post.

At the end of the day, the more efficient, relevant and correct travel information the website has to offer, the more successful it will be. One bit of information can ruin a trip. However, these sites must expand past this. Converting this information to marketing opportunities using the data is only the next step, and Orton's experience will supplement and optimize the process. Good move, Orbitz.
