Universal Opt-Out a good idea?

While targeted marketing is probably one of the most valuable tools of the internet for marketers, there are concerns and issues with its use that are currently being dealt with.

One is the fact of a universal opt-out system. Better Advertising, a start-up company, is developing a universal system that will appear on all targeted ads. It will allow consumers to hover over a certain part of the ad, and it will reveal the information the marketer used to place the ad, as well as provide them with the option to opt-out. The system, called Power I, should look the same on all targeted ads.

Good idea or bad idea? I generally agree with the tone of the article in saying that this is a good idea. All of us - as consumers - have the right for our privacy to be upheld. But in the mind of a marketer, too much intervention is bad intervention. It might cause more issues with online targeted marketing than ironing out the problems.

Bottom line - the system will put consumers at ease when they're online and see ads that are strikingly similar to their personal tastes and information. At the same time, it will allow relevant pieces of advertising to be delivered to them. This strikes a good balance.
